Refinements to the BRC250FE Increase Performance and Durability
BRC racing has taken a tough look at the demands Superkarts racing places on a two-stroke engine and gearbox. Anyone that competes in this elite class of motor sports is familiar with the incredible strain theses engines endure. Typically, they are stressed far beyond their original design for use as a 250GP motorcycle engine.
Through the efforts of the BRC racing program, which includes the invaluable track experience of our customers, many refinements in the BRC250FE engine have taken place over the past season. These new components will greatly improve the already fast engine package, providing increased power and increased durability in several critical areas. The most significant developments to the BRC250FE are described below:
All new Connecting Rods
The latest BRC250FE connecting rod is vastly superior to previous designs. Finite element analysis and real world track testing have resulted in a design that surpasses anything found in a Superkart engine.
Key features of the new Connecting rods include:
- Increased section thickness through the I-beam and big end resulting in a 78% increase in strength
- Thicker case depth and core hardness have increased both load capacity and fatigue strength
- Refinements to oiling grooves for improved lubrication-Increased interval required between connecting rod rebuild kits to 800km (500mi)
- Improved Primary and Tandem Gears
The BRC250FE produces a massive amount of power through the primary and tandem gears. Rough track conditions coupled with the power of the BRC250FE prompted BRC Racing to pursue the racing industries best to tackle the task of increasing the precision and strength of the gear train.
Key features of the refined gears include:
- Decreased backlash than Rotax 256 and previous BRC gears reduces damaging shock loading
- Shot peened tooth profiles reduces stress risers and increases surface compressive strength
- Aerospace quality vacuum arc re-melted alloy steel and leading edge heat treat methods have resulted in a higher load carrying capacity
- Improved Transmission Shift Mechanism and Forks
BRC Racing recognized the vulnerability of a Superkart gearbox, which prompted improvements to the original Rotax 256 shift mechanism and shift forks (forks designed for BRC “M0” series transmission gears only). These changes improve the precision of shifting, therefore reducing the risk of missed shifts and excessive component wear.
Key features of the refined shift mechanism include:
- Revised shift pawl profile for a more accurate and precise shift
- Thicker pawl and revised heat treatment for reduced wear and greater strength
- Increased pin strength for better feel and durability
Key features of the new shift forks (designed for BRC “M0” series gears only) include:
- Higher precision fork pin location for more accurate shifts and decreased drag on gears
- Machined from billet with improved material properties for less deflection and better wear
BRC Racing’s Commitment to the BRC250FE
Along with making the improvements noted above, BRC Racing is committed to taking a proactive roll in the development and maintenance of the BRC250FE engine package, while providing customers with updated components when necessary. BRC Racing is tirelessly developing solutions to driveline and durability issues inherent to Superkart racing. Prototype additions to the BRC250FE driveline are underway, with goals of reducing driveline wear and shock typically encountered in a Superkart racing environment. BRC Racing would like to offer our most sincere thanks to all of our customers and distributors who have joined us in the development of the ultimate Superkart engine.
